“Julien, shall we speak with my guest and see what we can determine about the artifacts?” Marie asked when everyone had finished their after-dinner drinks.

“Yeah, if there are any of ‘em floatin’ around town, we need ta find ‘em before some damn fool unleashes a plague of somethin’.”

“Austin, bring the elf to the back patio,” Marie commanded.

The others followed Marie and gathered in a half-circle. Moments later, Austin duck-walked a bound, hooded male figure from the house. He forced the man to his knees, and with a nod from Marie, ripped the canvas bag from his head.

The elf had dried blood crusted on his face and one eye swollen shut.

“What da hell, Marie? He wasn’t this banged up earlier.”

“He failed to understand his place when I asked his name,” Sera Ann called when she exited the house with Crosser at her heels. “I had Austin explain it to him.”

Marie looked at the elf and noted the defiance in his eyes as he tried to speak through magically sealed lips. “Seraphine, remove your gag. I wish to hear what he has to say for himself.”

Sera Ann raised her wand and held it before his face. “Daylor, if you attempt anything other than answering her questions, you will die screaming. Do you understand?”

The elf glared at her but nodded after several seconds. She waved her wand and muttered an incantation.

“Why am I here? I simply defended myself when those thugs attacked me,” he blustered.

Marie shook her head and frowned. “Do not play the innocent, elf. I already know that you and others brought forbidden artifacts into my domain. Tell me what I want to know, and this will go much easier for you. Refuse, and the consequences will be severe.”

“You plan to kill me as it is. Why should I tell you anything?”

Sera Ann burbled with laughter. “If you think death is the worst we can do, you truly do not understand your situation.”

“Go to hell, bitch,” he spat.

“Bitch? Oh, I think I might cry.” Sera Ann feigned wiping tears.

In a flash, she pressed her wand to his throat. “Bitch is a title I wear with pride, fool. Now answer Grand-mère before I forget that she wants you alive.”

The elf clamped his lips and refused to speak. Marie nodded at Austin. “Hold him.”

The temperature dropped as Marie called her magic to her. A faint glow surrounded her upraised hand as the power built until a glowing dark mist rested in her palm.

The elf’s eyes went round, and he struggled in Austin’s iron grip.

“No, please,” he croaked.

“Ah, you know what this is. Bien. Tell me where your accomplices are and what artifacts you’ve unleashed in my town.”

The elf stared in terror as Marie moved the mist toward him.

“I’m told the pain associated with this curse is excruciating. Supposedly the victims feel every moment as their organs slowly cook inside their bodies,” Marie explained in a conversational tone.

“As a necromancer, I have the skills to take you to the brink of death, pull you back, and do it repeatedly until I tire or the pain becomes so intense it finally breaks your mind.
